Romans 9: 1-6
(Romans 9: 1-6)
I say the truth in Christ, I lie
not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, That I have great
heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. For
I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen
according to the flesh: Who are Israelites; to whom
pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of
the law, and the service of God, and the promises; Whose are the fathers, and
of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for
ever. Amen. Not as though the word
of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of
Israel:
『For
I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen
according to the flesh: Who are Israelites』 Paul said
he was cursed for God's forgiveness and salvation against the Israelites who
persecute him. It is to the extent that it is okay to be cut off from Christ.
So, why is Paul so desperately at the Jewish Israelites who persecute him?
It was
because Paul was a person who experienced God's grace. Paul himself was a
person who persecuted Christians just like the Jews who persecuted him before,
so he knows well that he is an unqualified person and worthless person who is
completely unqualified for the grace and love of God. It was because I
experienced God who came to the worthless person first and gave me grace and
love. As Paul persecuted Christians, he first experienced God's grace, so he
can see and love his fellow Jews who persecute him now with the eyes of God's
grace.
『Not
as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel,
which are of Israel: Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they
all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. Paul said that the word
of God's promise was not given to all Israelites of fleshly lineage, but to the
true spiritual Israel who was chosen and called according to God's good will.
God chose Isaac, who was born with the word of promise, not Ishmael, which
Abraham obtained from Hagar, Sarah's maidservant.
